About the Project

Role: Lead Front-End Developer, Technical Specs Developer

The Michigan Department of Education, Low Incidence Outreach (MDE-LIO) provides supports for students who are blind/visually impaired (BVI) and students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH). MDE-LIO requested an updated website that made their information more findable, up-to-date, and accessible. After sourcing a design from a local company, the Center for Educational Networking (CEN) developed the site using Drupal 7.

Because there were so many parts to the site, I developed a technical specifications document that corresponded to a feature inventory to track our development progress. I developed the theme using Bootstrap and LESS to make my development more efficient. I collaborated with CEN’s back-end developer using Git for version control with a remote repository on Atlassian Stash.

Because MDE-LIO serves students with visual impairments, accessibility was especially important. To help provide a better experience for users with visual impairments, I created a color contrast switcher that allows users to toggle between higher contrast versions of the site.
